kde login screen problems

i'm using redhat 7.2 and kde 2.2 and i'm trying to do two things with the
kde login screen:

a) change the background
right now it's just the redhat logo and i want my own wallpaper. problem
is, even if i go to the config screen and set set up this part, my wallpaper
only appears for a few seconds, and then is replaced with the redhat pic
again.

b) i want to be able to quit X from this same login screen. how do i do
this? my only options under session type are:
  default
  kde
  enlightenment
  gnome
  failsafe

and when i go to shutdown..., reboot has a dropdown menu next to it, but
there aren't any options it it. how do i fix this?

thanks for your help people.
