I know it is old, but it's still valid in a way.

The point is... in order for KDE to be able to use your special keys, X must 
recognise them as keys.

Use xev to find out the scan codes, map them to F13-FXX and use them.

I also have those funny Sleep, PowerOff and whatever the third one is and have 
them assigned as F13-F15.

[lada at smrz ~]$ more .xmodmaprc
keycode 227 = F13
keycode 223 = F14
keycode 222 = F15

This is more of a X issue than KDE. But anyway, it would be probably good to 
add it to FAQ. After I do my exam from Data Structures, I might write 
something down. :-)
