mounting NTFS

I had this problem a few days ago, but I'm still a newbie at GNU/Linux !
The only way I found out is to remove the extended partition under WinNT and 
to create newer partitions, but non-extended. The trouble I had was the 
extended partition appeared in /mnt but I couldn't do anything on it, even if 
I was logged as root. The problem disapeared as soon as I had removed the 
extended partition. WinNT warns users when creating an extended paritition 
that it may not appear from other OSes.
