Hiding Applications in Taskbar

I see that that would now be:
kstart --tosystray command

But I'm not sure if that will work properly for non-kde programs? I tried
kstart --skiptaskbar gkrellm, and that doesn't seem to work at all.
However I tried with konqueror just to check, and that seems to work..
