No jpegs in KDE 3

Hi,
I just upgraded to KDE 3 from 2.2.2 by compiling from source (very nice
looking), and now I've found that it doesn't seem to be able to render jpeg
images, there don't appear to be any related error messages, but if I choose
a jpeg as a background image, or even try to preview it when selecting a
background, nothing appears. Other image formats display fine and I was able
to view jpegs fine with kde 2.2.2
I did notice when running configure that it checked for jpeg and jpeg6b.
I have jpeg6b, but it only said yes to jpeg.
How can I rectify this? I installed qt using the method described on the
source download page.

Wait: Did you know that there's a direct correlation between the decline of
Spirograph and the rise in gang activity? Think about it.
