Kmail

[Tom Achtenberg]

Could you tell me where in the kmail config that setting is?  I have not
been able to find it like I can in other programs.

Well Tom,  looking at a mail *IS* reading it. In kmails config you can set
how many seconds it must be displayed before it is marked as read. This is
consistent with all major mail programs.
