I had a similar problem which turned out to be the fault of QT configuration. 
Somewhere around 3.0.2-3 the default config apparently changed and you had to 
pass extra parameters for the same result. Namely, check configure --help's 
section on --qt-imgfmt-<format>. For example --qt-imgfmt-jpeg. Seems jpeg 
wasn't built by default. Adding --with-imgftm-jpeg=builtin fixed the issue. 
(This was around the pre-3.0.3 qt-copy). But in the final 3.0.3 it seems to 
have been fixed.
