It's primarily a CPU and Disk speed issue with a dash of memory on the side.

Spiders can be quite aggressive when indexing a site unfortunately,
and more than a few requests at a time tends to cause quite a bit of
IO contention which quickly makes the system unusable. This makes it a
bit difficult to solve as a class of problems - it's not just a case
of throwing a bunch of machine power at it sadly.

(Not helping that repository browsers like CGit tend to offer lots of
different options for viewing effectively the same thing which
multiplies the problem out further - the above wouldn't be anywhere as
much an issue if they were better with the links they offered)
