I thought webmaster at kde.org was only an alias that forwarded to
kde-www, which is itself a mailman list.

If that is indeed the case, then couldn't webmaster at kde.org be aliased
to: 

kde-www,"|/usr/bin/vacation webmaster"

This shouldn't be a problem for subscribers who are normally expected
to use kde-www at kde.org anyway.  Vacation is nice because it won't send
an auto-response every single time a user emails webmaster.
