index.phtml vs. index.php

Hi all,

i got a request to support the old index.phtml files, so that older bookmarks 
will not run to nirvana. 

obviously the apache configuration has index.phtml in its DirectoryIndex list 
before index.php. Now if a folder has an index.phtml AND an index.php, 
index.phtml will be prefered. Could that be changed? Or shall i remove 
index.phtml again therefor ?
