Trouble with Emerge

The emerge bundle has been stopped after the svn to git migration 
because the git client on www.winkde.org is too old and therefore unusable.
To have this service restarted there is an update of the git client (and 
probably the debian system on which the git client is based on) 
required. As I'm no debian expert, this is out of my scope.
If that has been fixed one additional question is:  which release of the 
portage tree should the bundle have and on which emerge branch it should 
be based ?
