xine-lib really required for kdebase ?

That is correct: the current backend isn't really suitable for kdebase 
since it's mostly incomplete (doesn't do video or streams for example), 
it's only good enough for testing Amarok. If you want a general purpose 
backend you'll have to wait for Trolltech to release theirs.
