That's not fine for me, you lose the author of the patch in git history, if the patch is made of several commits, you lose them.
Git is supposed to be used like that.
Moreover if he never used git, he has to learn how to use it... by learning how and what to push in a private repository, it is more unlikely that he will screw up the main repository when he get rights to commit there.
