It can't be Kubuntu specific, there are at least 3 other kubuntu users
here (including me)
It could be you specific.

Are you running this as the user buzzmandt?

If you still have no success with this please try the core telepathy
mailing list [1]. It's their component which is breaking. Show them
error from that log file you posted earlier, along with the version of
telepathy-gabble being used.
