You are on pay-per-bytes-transferred 3G and don't want your huge roster
of friends and their avatars to be downloaded just now? You were
configuring stuff at 4AM and don't want to admit to your friends that
your sleep schedule is screwed up by appearing online? Whatever, the
point is we are making a decision to connect without the user's explicit
consent.

My 2 cents is to either:
1) have the usual checkbox there in the final stage of account creation
"Yes, additionally connect this account I've just created straight away"
OR
2) have the "finish" or "create account" button be called something else
(I actually don't know what it is called currently, but bear with me)
which conveys the fact that it is going to connect in addition to
creating the account. "Create and sign on" maybe?
Either way, the user has been informed that the account is to be connected.
