AFAIK, it's not possible as being in the system tray forces you to be square.
I think it will mess with the popups too.

Could you try it for us?

Add this line to
/usr/share/apps/plasma/plasmoids/org.kde.ktp-chat/metadata.desktop
X-Plasma-NotificationArea=true

Then log out and back in again, and add it to the sys-tray.
