mkdtlogin oesn't do anything for gdm, only for dtlogin.

maybe i should write a mkgdmlogin. :-)

To enable KDE in gdm, you need to run gdmsetup and 
edit /etc/X11/gdm.conf

man gdmsetup(1)
man gdm(1)
