There is very little reason  or gain to be had from  64 bit
applications performance wise.
You will primarily need 64-bit binaries for applications with
very large datasets.  ( i.e. Databases or large computational
models as in meterological predictions )

If you want to contribute to the performance and fancyness
of KDE on Solaris it will be much better spent time if
you would look into if it is possible to integrate
the SUN media libraries  into KDElibs-3.x.x

This has been DONE for the SUN GNOME2  distribution.
therfore I beleive it could be possible for KDE to,
although I am not qualified to attempt it.
