Dear "Google Summer of Code" students,

My name is Andreas Schilling. I am a research assistant at the chair of Information Systems and Services at the University of Bamberg. In my research I examine factors that keep developers committed in open-source projects. Together with Lydia Pintscher, I am currently focusing my research on motivational factors and how they develop on members during GSoC.

GSoC is a very special annual event, and the effects it has on students are an interesting research topic. During GSoC, students experience various aspects of development work in open-source projects which affect not only their later view on those projects but commonly their future commitment in these projects.

Because the best way to find out more about these motivational factors is to survey the people who are directly affected, I would like to take the chance and ask you for your help. It would help me a lot if you could give me a quick feedback about the early experiences you have made so far in GSoC. Based on my previous research I developed an online questionnaire to which I have sent you already invitations links via a separate email. The questionnaire is in total 4 pages long and I promise it will not take longer than 5 minutes to answer it.

I would greatly appreciate if you could help me in my research and participate in the survey until June 10th.

I assure you that none of your personal answers will ever be given to the KDE team (not even to Lydia) or to any other party. Consequently, I guarantee you that your answers have no effect at any time on your GSoC-evaluations, on your mentorship, or on your stipends.

As soon as I finish my research, I will publish the aggregated results of this study on Lydia's blog, so that you can have a look the findings.

If you have any questions about this questionnaire or about my research please to not hesitate contacting me.

Finally, I would like to wish all of you the best for your coding projects.

Thank you very much in advance

Andreas
