Mmh... since all this problem of submodules comes from the required ability of 
moving playground stuff to the main module (through kdereview, but IMHO that's 
an avoidable step by just asking developers to clone/checkout $foo), what 
about making playground a branch of the module they track?

This would make the problem go away, at least partly, without having to split.
