I think having desktop_amarok.pot instead of
desktop_extragear-multimedia_amarok.pot would be very good, just step away
_from perfect*. It's not a problem to rename existing translations.

[*] Handling translations of .desktop files very much reflects
centralization we've had so far. I consider it bad as it is, and wouldn't
want to propagate it further. The perfect situation would be where each
functionally monolithic piece of software would have its own catalog for
.desktop files, with name of that catalog depending solely on that piece of
software -- e.g. amarok_desktop.pot, or kopete_desktop.pot (instead of it
being drowned in desktop_kdenetwork.pot). This would improve grouping of
related material and enable lossless moves between translation modules. It
would also mean explosion in number of *_desktop catalogs, but this I don't
consider a problem any more, if it ever were -- there's no difference
between having 1000 or 1500 catalogs in the project.
