Hey Eric,

http://quality.kde.org/ gives some hints, but the short of it: find an
application you'd like to improve and help were you can. For example
with documentation, or verifying and closing bugs. You can announce
your intentions on the mailinglist for that app, and ask the
developers if there is anything you can do with the skills you have.
