and annoy those people who do use it and find it useful.

this is the sort of thing that should be sorted out at freedesktop.org, imho. 
also note that kde4 will have the option (and it may well even ship with it 
on by default) to not use an actual folder for your desktop contents since 
that's really a pretty crappy idea in this day and age of virtual folders, 
task oriented software, etc...
