Welcome to multi-user unix.
As long as you have some spare diskspace linux will happily let you run two
different versions of kde without interfering with each other.

If your current production machine has enough horse-power you can even run the
two versions at the same time and switch between them.

This makes it extremely easy to find differences and additions to the current
devel version versus the released version.

The Building from CVS guide has all the details.

I did some space measurements for Carlos on a minimal kde set (qt-copy, arts,
kdelibs, kdebase and kdepim) and came up with the following numbers:
> > Grand Total: 3,4 Gb
> > ~/kde-unstable: 675M
> > ~/src/build: 2Gb
> > ~/src/kde:      765M    (This includes the build for qt-copy of course)

Everything is compiled with debug-output. If your aim is to write
documentation you could save a reasonable amount of space by disabling the
debug options.
