Use whatever software you are most comfortable with, and that helps you do 
your job.  GIMP is a paint app, not a vector drawing program for example.

If you're worried about others helping you with your work, just remember you 
can distribute your art under a sane and open format like PNG (for pixmaps), 
or SVG (for vector art).
