pstoraster uses the FontPath entry defined in the CUPS configuration
file to specify the font paths used by the rasterizer. By default, the
font path is /usr/share/cups/fonts. However, the widely used Foomatic
printer driver DB uses its own rasterizer based on gs, and although
I'm not sure about the following, it looks like this rasterizer does
not redefine GS_LIB (as pstoraster does), such that the font path is
the default one under the user used to run the print process (which
is different from the user that sent the print job).
Finally, there's a plan to support fontconfig in future CUPS-1.2.
