Well, you left out an important part of the question when quoting it, namely 
"even more when developed in free time". I don't know about Evolution, but, as 
far as I know, Thunderbird is developed by several paid developers.

I don't think that the situation with KMail will change as long as it's 
developed by volunteers in their spare time. I'd be very happy to be proven 
wrong.
