I had something similar when an Akonadi IMAP-Resource went wild. It just downloaded and downloaded and downloaded. You can figure out if it is the case with you and which one it would be by running the tool "nethogs <network device (e.g. eth0)>". There would be a process "/usr/bin/akonadi_imap_resource" using all available download bandwidth. You can then grep for its process id in "ps aux" output and look up what it is by looking into .kde/share/config/akonadi_imap_resource_xyrc. Remove that resource, stop akonadi, remove the database and start anew.
