And after a reboot:
Nepomuk Processes: 100 MB
Akonadi Processes: 186 MB  (incl mysql).

Not bad for two accounts with 20K msgs.

And it is impressively snappy.

Its just when things go wrong, they seem to go impressively wrong :)
