User speaking :-) - the first option would feel peculiar - not
behaving as other folders, and would, I suspect, give rise to bug
reports and adverse comment in one place or another.

The second sounds a much better idea - the whole search being still
available until manually changed, but clear indications of read and
unread.  I doubt if I'm alone in occasionally backtracking to one I
read a few minutes ago, when I realise that I didn't quite take in
some point. :-)
