I've fixed the Akonadi server side part of this problem yesterday (in master, backport to 1.6 pending), it now no longer accidentally strips content mimetypes for those collections. That fixed a similar problem with some maildir scenarios for me, which means KMail also behaves correctly. So, further fixes should now only be required in the resources in kdepim-runtime.
