KMail only shows the group name when I use the group - it expands the 
addresses in the background - I don't like this behaviour, because you can't 
see what's happening, but on my system at least it does work.

Do you have more than one email address?  If so, do what I did, and create a 
Test group, with your multiple addresses in the group (or use family addresses 
if they are willing), then write a message to Test, and see what gets 
delivered.  In my case I added 4 email addresses, all mine (used for different 
purposes) and received four copies of my test email.
