What do you mean by "old kmail1 mail format"? mbox? Or the mix of mbox 
and maildir?

mbox is definitely needed, if only because the local mail spool usually 
is an mbox file. OTOH, a mixedmaildir resource which tries to support 
both, mbox and maildir, but does so using different (and apparently less 
efficient) code than the pure maildir and mbox resources indeed does not 
make that much sense.
