Making a backup isn't strictly necessary unless you want to be able to 
go back to KMail1 after having tried KMail2. (Or unless you want to fix 
bugs in the migration and therefore need to be able to run it multiple 
times.)

You surely backup all of your data regurarly anyway. This will do if 
something goes completely wrong.
