As far as stop gap measures are concerned, the cached .vcf files are 
already all I need. However, I'd really like to learn how to program 
with Akonadi, unless Akonadi and its dependencies prove too time-
consuming to get into.

I have no idea. I didn't get anything at all to work with the Korundum 
packages in Debian/unstable, but that could be because I'm running 
"experimental" KDE 4.6.1 packages for the rest of KDE. Bottom line: it's 
probably easier to forget about Ruby and use C++.
