I strongly agree, however the issue of per-folder notification remains. I don't 
expect that to be too much to handle in case of server-side filtering...on the 
other hand in case of multiple clients and client-side filtering it all turns 
into a whole lot different game. Unless, of course, the server-side filtering 
deals only with server side folders, and client-side filtering puts mail into 
local folders only. But expecting users to follow such a rule would be naive.

Turning KMail's entire filtering facilities into a frontend for Akonadi-side 
filtering would also be neat.
