The HD only works in one direction: You can only use Kontact HD if you do have the screen size (and resolution). It shows more information on more space.
Sounding like an iPad application seems a good step forward to me, btw. >;)

I found that having no qualifier for the desktop version, just "Kontact", is not enough to clearly make the distinction, so I would recommend a qualifier.

I first thought about being even catchier like
  Komo or Koto for "Kontact Touch"
and 
  Kohd spoken "Code" for "Kontact HD", where you would get the full "Kohd". :)
  (Hey Germans and KDEpromos, don't jump on me, its a joke.)

Just to get silly: What about
  Kontact Mouse
  Kontact MT (Mouse Technology)
  Kontact GT (Gran Turismo)
  Kontact GTI (Gran Turismo Injection)
