[Kde-pim] Akonadi synchronization

Can somebody please explain what the term "synchronization" means in Akonadi? Does it involve reloading the backend data from scratch, or does it mean just checking for changes which might have occurred since the last synch, without doing a full reload? An example of the latter case might be when a collection has an interval cache time - a synchronization request might just mean that the interval cache time was shortened on this occasion.
