One cause of this I have found - if you display your names as Lastname, 
Firstname, to display the list in the normal alphabetical order, it gets very 
confused.  The commas are taken to mean the end of an entry.

I really should have filed a bug on this, as that option, though one I've used 
for a very long time, causes big problems at the moment.  I had to change the 
names on my groups to get rid of the commas.
