An alternative is the usage of disconnected IMAP for one (or more) of 
your IMAP folders in combination with local subscription.

Let's say you have an IMAP folder called "offline". Then you create a 
disconnected IMAP account (with the same settings as your online IMAP 
account). Then you select "Local Subscription" from the context menu of 
the newly created account and in the dialog you subscribe to the 
"offline" folder. To keep this folder up-to-date you should enable 
interval checking for the account.
