How about using a DIGEST: keyword to indicate the whole commit text
(omitting lines containing certain other keywords such as SILENT:, and
diffs). <digest></digest> would then only need to be used by those who
want to censor bits of the commit message, or to produce presentable merge
commit texts for example.

Am I right in assuming that there will be some manual input to the
finished digest to tidy up the contents and to give it some sort of
logical order? If so, I don't see the need in general for
<digest></digest> as opposed to DIGEST:
