Thanks for the info, Tobias.  Just another crumb that may or may not help.  
Nepomuk is also, apparently, the cause of the very long start-up times for 
kontact.  I have watched it take 65%+ of CPU for well over a minute before 
kontact displays, when it immediately drops back to reasonable levels.

I hope these observations are helpful.
