For the crashes, please report bugs including backtraces if you haven't yet 
done so.

I have no idea why you're experiencing this - it's definitely not on purpose.
Here on Jaunty, sorting works like expected, both with the distribution's 
4.2.2 and the self-built current 4.2 branch. The only issue there I am aware 
of for 4.2.2 is that the sorting settings are not 100% persisted among 
akregator sessions for some people.
