Thanks for the prompt response. Is this what you mean?
$ mysql -u root -p --socket=/var/run/mysqld/mysqld.sock
Enter password:
Welcome to the MySQL monitor. Commands end with ; or \g.
Your MySQL connection id is 21829
Server version: 5.0.70 Gentoo Linux mysql-5.0.70-r1
That is actually the default value for the socket argument.
