The Akonadi resource is basically the data source, i.e. the things which reads 
your data file(s).

The applications/clients get the data from the Akonadi server, basically a 
mediator or proxy between the data source and the client, doing caching and 
all that stuff.

Yes.

I wrote a tutorial for creating resources [1] though you will probably also 
need a serializer plugin for your data/payload type as well.
