Did you try profiling using KCacheGrind to see where the cycles go?

(Although I'm afraid you won't get far -- my Celeron 450 is already too slow 
for serious cachegrinding and your K6 won't make it better. You could try 
though, if it works it is generally more accurate than strace.)
