Is the 1024x768 mode the first one mentioned in the "Screen" section of 
XF86Config?

To clarify, you are saying that X comes up in 1600x1200 or that X comes 
up in 1024x768 and that KDE overlaps the screen edges?

What happens if you start another window manager like twm or ice?
