This has nothing to do with making it easier for developers to shoot
themselves into the foot.
If you want to get at the backend object, go ahead. It's certainly possible,
just as you can access all the private objects of Qt classes if you want to.
It's just that your application will break badly when the lib is updated and
users will blame it on the libraries - because when they updated the lib the
application broke.
If you want to extend Phonon that's great. libphononexperimental is the
playground that may even be used for "almost production code" if you know
what you're getting into.
