I had previously tried -O0 and -O2 - but both failed the same way

As described in http://lists.kde.org/?l=kde-devel&m=112527846103573&w=2 from 
your previous email, I placed that 'export' in a file under ~/.kde/env and, 
lo and behold, it worked. :)

Thx for your help - its greatly appreciated. Now all I have to do is to get a 
few of the other KDE components to even compile!
