of course. even after (if) we get a standard VFS, the player should still open
the file, but via the VFS not via it's own implementations of protocols.

the reason i put the GUI and the IO layer at opposite sides of the little
ascii diagram was to help make the point clear that they would be separate
items. the front end should not need to do the reading, but at the same time
it's unfortunate that the media players are all doing the reading themselves
without help from a larger infrastructure. this makes them inconsistent with
the capabilities of the rest of the desktop. well, the KDE desktop anyways =)
